Early days in Llanberis and Nant Peris

The Beatles were becoming famous with 'Twist and Shout' and Chubby Checker's ' Let's Twist Again ' kept getting stuck on Vaynol Arm's juke box - until 'Chuff' ( Dave Gerard ) gave it a gentle kick with his mountain boots. Everybody wore high altitude mountain boots in the early 60's. they were part of the climbers uniform to match the britches ( trolley's in Manchester Gritstone talk! ). The Merseybeat was taking off with The Beatles, Gerry and the Pacemakers, Freddie & The Dreamers etc..

In 1963 most of the lakes in North Wales were frozen to a depth of 18 inches and rumours of motor bike racing on Llyn Padarn were being circulated. Tremendous thunder echoed through the valleys as the ice expanded or contracted on the lakes ( llyns ). An hour chipping at the ice with an ice axe would eventually make a small hole through the ice to the water below.
